ACTRA Winter 4 hour Jerrabomberra virtual rogaine – wrap up

Congratulations to all who participated in the virtual Jerrabomberra and Queanbeyan rogaine! Virtual rogaines are proving to be very popular, and we were delighted to hear about all the people who tried rogaining for the first time! It was also great to see so many people doing the event multiple times – the rogaine covered a huge area had plenty to offer in the far corners of Jerra and Queanbeyan.

Well done to all the category winners and placegetters! Special mentions go to Ryan Stocks who won the overall event with 350 points more than the closest competitor, Danielle Donegan for winning the women’s event, and Greg Hosking and Kate Thomas for winning the mixed category.

Full results are available to download here.

We have not removed the rogaine map from the MapRunF app, so if you missed out or want to go back to improve your score, don’t forget you can still do so!

Another virtual Maprun event building on the success of the Mt Rogers event, run over the second week of the school holidays from 6 am Saturday 11 July to 6 pm Sunday 2 August 2020. You can participate any time when the course is open. Your team can take up to 4 hours to do the course. Rogaining scoring applies - controls score points according to 10s (e.g. 54 scores 50 points) but with 30 points per minute late after 4 hours as penalty.

Either download and print a map (available here as 2 x A4 maps) and control descriptions (available here) or you can pick a free teslin one from Paddy Pallin in Lonsdale Street, Braddon from Thursday 9th July onwards. Please use hand sanitiser before touching the maps.

Please read the course setter's notes (available here). These are printed on the back of the teslin maps, or you can print a copy yourself.

At least one person in each team will need to download the MapRunF App (make sure you get the "F" version). Either seach on your app store or go to the website that will direct you to the right App. Please download and read these instructions on using MapRunF to learn how to use the App. The App uses the GPS on your phone to work out you are at the control location. To score a control you will need to be within 10 m of the feature. Check your detailed control descriptions as there will be no flags.

Make sure you charge your phone before your run. You may want to turn on MapRunF’s GPS Battery Save Mode.

The start/hash house is at the Big Blue “The Scar” sign at the entrance to the car park on Southbar Rd, Queanbeyan. Search for “The Scar” on Google Maps. The car park is a public car carpark for a dog park, a BMX track and bushwalking on Mt Jerrabomberra, so there will be non-rogainers parked there. If the car park is full, you can try Sassafras Cres on the other side of Southbar Rd or the carpark at Bicentennial Park (control 82), which is on Crest Park Parade, about 1km walk from the start.

Do not activate the App until you are in the car park. Otherwise you may accidentally start your rogaine early when you drive in past the blue sign.

A reminder that you participate in this event at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety. The course is designed to maximise use of footpaths and underpasses but you may need to cross some busy roads. Please take care. You should also observe appropriate social distancing if you encounter other teams or people.

There are no water drops on the course, so carry what you need. There are shops in the suburbs (e.g. north of 58 in Jerrabomberra, between 62 and 45 in Queanbeyan and at the Queanbeyan CBD between 50, 73, 76 and 55), but in support of physical distancing rules we’re not encouraging you to visit them unless you need to.

Entry is free but if you enter we can upload and create results in the traditional format after the finish. Results will be available as teams upload them from the MapRunF App after they finish. See who you are competing against by viewing the team list at the link above. Feel free to do it again and again. Introduce someone new to rogaining. See if you can go further with a different friend. Take your kids or parents.

If you have specific questions, please contact the coordinator Tom Banks.

You can also use your MapRunF App by going around one of the virtual orienteering maps available in Canberra. Aranda, Florey, Red Hill, Garren, Monash, Weetangara Street-O events so far.
