I remember stuffing around with old petzels years ago... I haven't been on any 24 hour events for a few years now... but I use the following outdoors most days, and believe it would make an awesome rogaining head torch (http://dx.com/p/singfire-sf-536-cree-xm-l-t6-1000lm-3-mode-white-zooming-headlamp-black-silver-2-x-18650-179137). High and low beam modes, and zoom to throw capabilities - With 4Ahr of batteries it lasts a couple of hours on full, or twice as long on low... and then you can carry extra batt...

Well 5 years have passed since I first posted to this topic, and strangely enough my children have multipled and are growing up also. As such I thought it might be good to give an update on my thoughts. I have now taken my son on two Rogaines where just he and I have entered as a family categoty team. Rather than the 'strap him on my back' approach as suggested in one of the prior posts, I only entered as a team of two once I decided he was capable of walking the entire distance. As such, at age 4.5, we...

I have both Ayups and Spike headlights. The Spike wins hands down for rogaines. It has a spotter beam, concentrated to pick out controls from distance and a few spread beams for bushbashing which surpass the Ayup spread. The battery if used on medium will last 10 - 12 hrs....

AYUP ! Earlier poster right though, you have to look sideways at the map if you've contacted / plastic covered it as it as direct beam can be very bright ! The AYUPs alos tend to pick up the tiniest bit of lum on any marker....

Sample - NSW cloth flag hung on rock outcrop
badly faded - reduced visibility in daylight and poor at night
vulnerable to wind damage due to spinning/twisting of string
cloth flags can collapse or become skewed giving inconsistent visibility depending on approach.
Light and compact for carrying when hanging or collecting.
