Rogaine Markers, hanging and reflectors 2011/06/19 18:38 Karma: 1
The IRF is reviewing current rules and standards around checkpoint flags.
If you have any feedback or examples of good or bad checkpoints in rogaines, please add a reply. Feel free to include photos. Alternatively, e-mail them to david.baldwin@bilbys.org

Brief
  • To review the rules about the hanging of checkpoint markers.

  • To invite input from the IRF Council and beyond, as the subcommittee sees fit

  • To consider whether these rules are being followed.

  • To recommend any changes or measures thought to be appropriate to ensure high standards of checkpoint markers.

  • The subcommittee of David Baldwin, Bob Reddick and Lauri Leppick will report on 1 August.

The attached rules summary and some example scenarios was prepared by Bob Reddick (USA). One of the topics under discussion is whether reflectors should be allowed in some circumstances.

I look forward to your input!
    Thanks, David.

Sample - corflute control of style used by Victorian Rogaine Assoc.
Wrapped around tree branch to improve resistance to wind damage.
Intention sheet attached to one face of flag.

Sample - close up of ACT corflute control flag
Wrapped around tree trunk for improved visibility from all sides.
Single string threaded through ties to other 2 sides and through number plate.
Flag folds flat to carry when hanging/collecting - can be bulky in large numbers (15+ - approx thickness when folded 2cm).

Sample - ACT flag hung under bush in creek bed
Reasonable visibility from approaching in either direction. Limited options available at this control site.

Sample - NSW cloth flag hung on rock outcrop
badly faded - reduced visibility in daylight and poor at night
vulnerable to wind damage due to spinning/twisting of string
cloth flags can collapse or become skewed giving inconsistent visibility depending on approach.
Light and compact for carrying when hanging or collecting.
