Map creation 2008/07/08 16:06 Karma: 0
I've just moved out into central NSW and only 1:50,000 maps are available for all the local national parkes and state forests. Thats fine for navigating in general but i was hoping to organise a small local event and would like a more detailed map. Does anyone know if it is possible to get more detailed maps for such an area (Parkes, Forbes)? Can i pay to have one made? If not it's an hour and a bit drive to Orange where the 1:25000 maps cut off.

Thanks for any info.

Chris

Hi Chris,

In short the anser is yes.

If the land that you want to use is a state forest or National Park, than you should contact the managers and ask if they have a higher resolution map. A lot of the state forests and some of the National Parks have these maps for land management purpoese.

If the land is close to a town centre, then often the council will have a high resolution map (sometimes with contours as small as 2 m).

If the answer to both of the above is no, then you can pay to have a map made - but it is very expensive and likely to be outside of the range for a local event. The traditional thing to do here is to buy the aerial photographs from the central mapping Authority and then use photogrametry to make the map. I think that this what many of the orienteering clubs do.

Another option is to use a photocopier or computer and double the scale. If the detail was not enough you could combine it with an aerial photograph (eg. Google maps) and give your participants both.
